Your First Steps in Modulus: Factory Automation

When you first land on your starting island in Modulus Factory Automation, the scale of what awaits can feel daunting. Do not worry — every sprawling mega-factory begins with a single Miner and one conveyor belt. This beginner's guide to Modulus Factory Automation will walk you through everything from placing your first building to delivering modules to your first Neural Monument.

The core gameplay loop of Modulus Factory Automation is elegantly simple: extract raw resources → smelt them into Base Cubes → shape those cubes with the Cutter, Painter, and Stamper → assemble the pieces into Modules → deliver Modules to the Neural Monument. Each step builds on the last, and your factory will grow organically as you unlock new technologies via the Tech Tree.

⛏️ Step 1: Setting Up Your First Mining Operation

Poly Rock nodes are the lifeblood of your factory in Modulus Factory Automation. Each Poly Rock node can accommodate up to four Miners. This is not just a suggestion — four Miners per node is the exact ratio that feeds a single Furnace at full efficiency. Place your Miners on a Poly Rock node, then connect them with Conveyor Belts running to a Furnace.

Key tip for new players: Rotate Miners using [T] to mirror their output direction before placing. This small habit will save you hours of later redesign when your factory expands. Once your Furnace is smelting Base Cubes, connect its output conveyor toward your Cutter.

✂️ Step 2: The Shaping Trio — Cut, Paint, Stamp

Three buildings form the backbone of module production in Modulus Factory Automation: the Cutter, the Painter, and the Stamper. Think of them as an assembly line within an assembly line.

Cutter: Takes a Base Cube and slices it into a specific shape. You configure the cut profile before production begins. For your first factory, stick to simple shapes — the Neural Monument Tier 1 requirements are intentionally achievable without complex cuts.

Painter: Applies colour to a cut shape. Colour is as important as shape in Modulus Factory Automation. Each Neural Monument requires specific colour/shape combinations. Keep separate conveyor lanes for each colour to avoid contamination.

Stamper: Applies a stamp pattern to a painted shape. For early-game play, you may not need the Stamper immediately — check your current Neural Monument requirements first. If stamps are not listed, skip this step and go straight to the Assembler.

🔩 Step 3: Assembling Your First Modules

The Assembler is where the magic happens in Modulus Factory Automation. It takes two or more processed shape inputs and combines them into a complete Module. Modules are what the Neural Monument consumes — they are the final output of your entire production chain.

Position your Assembler so that two separate input conveyors can feed it simultaneously. In the early game this typically means one line of Cut+Painted shapes from the left and one from the right. The Assembler will automatically combine them according to its configured recipe.

Pro tip: If your Assembler's output conveyor is constantly backed up, add a second Assembler in parallel — but make sure you have enough upstream throughput to feed both.

🧠 Step 4: Delivering to the Neural Monument

Your first Neural Monument will display a glowing hologram of the exact Module it requires. Study this hologram carefully before you lay a single conveyor. It shows you: the cut shape, the colour, any stamp pattern, and the quantity needed.

Build your production chain backwards from this requirement. What colour is the module? Configure your Painter. What shape? Set your Cutter. Is there a stamp? Add a Stamper in the chain. How many modules per minute does the Monument consume? Use that number to calculate how many of each machine you need.

Once your production line is delivering the correct Modules, the Monument will begin filling up. When it reaches 100%, you will earn Data Shards — the primary currency used to unlock new islands, upgrade buildings, and advance the Tech Tree in Modulus Factory Automation.

⌨️ Essential Hotkeys Every New Player Must Know

Learning the keyboard shortcuts in Modulus Factory Automation dramatically speeds up your factory building. Here are the most important ones:

KeyAction
TMirror / rotate building before placement
RMB (Right Mouse Button)Reset cursor to selection tool
TabCycle through toolbar categories
Ctrl + RMBCopy a building's configuration
Ctrl + LMBPaste configuration onto a building
MMB (Middle Mouse Button)Copy a building without its configuration
Ctrl + ZUndo last action
Click + DragCopy a rectangular section of factory
RMB on minimap islandTeleport to that island

Memorise the Ctrl+RMB/LMB copy-paste combo early. When you need to build 20 Painters with identical settings, copying the configuration from the first one rather than manually setting each is a massive time saver.

🗺️ Understanding Islands and Expansion

Modulus Factory Automation takes place across a series of distinct floating islands. Your starting island has limited space and resources. As you earn Data Shards from Neural Monuments and invest them in the Tech Tree, you will unlock the ability to access new islands — each with different Poly Rock node layouts, more space, and new challenges.

Inter-island logistics in Modulus Factory Automation require the Drone Hub, which is unlocked via the Tech Tree. Until then, each island must be self-sufficient. Plan your early factory with expansion in mind — leave room for the infrastructure you will need when Drones come online.
